Creativity can flourish best when you don't set expectations for artwork and crafts. Let them decide how they want their piece. Give them guidance, and small guidelines, but then let them show off their personality! As you do it will help provide them with confidence that they can create what they want, how they want, and all by themselves. Children i notice want to please others. I know some are perfectionists. However, when you consistently congratulate them on their own work, encouraging that they can do it, will help them build confidence in not only their artistical endeavors, but their social, intellectual, physical, and spiritual ones as well.
Our 1st Day Craft i like to keep for the students books. I let them put choose their favorite color, or two, then we paint both hands one at a time, and use baby wipes for them to hold onto, until we can wash them off in the sink.
This craft, you cut an apple in half so you can see the seeds, and make a 2D shape with paint and paper. If you were to cut it horizontally, the star shape hidden within, gets to be discovered. Using apples halves as stamps show off the child's care and patience as they grasp large objects and meticulously display their artwork on the A page. Be sure to add stems using markers or paint.
This page is a bit more tricky, and takes preparation. Here is what you will need:
- glue
- rice- caterpillar eggs
- green dot markers, or pom poms- caterpillar
- small twigs- to hold up the chrysalis
- brown crepe paper- for the chrysalis
- colorful tissue paper-butterfly colors
- pipe cleaner to tie the tissue paper for the center of the butterfly
